ROAM THE EARTH - WHAT WE DO
By day, I am a professional violinist; I have had music in my life since I was 4 years old! But through music, I nurtured a passion for travel. I took my first trip abroad without my parents at the age of 11; a music tour to Canada. I immediately fell in love with the lifestyle of living out of a suitcase and exploring places and cultures that I had only ever dreamed of.
Since the age of 11, I have travelled to 33 countries across the world and that number continues to grow. Some of them I have been to while on tour with various orchestras and ensembles for work, other places were of my own choice. Whatever took me to those places, I feel like each experience has helped me to grow as a person in so many ways. I am more knowledgeable, more confident, more independent and more resourceful thanks to the lessons that the world has taught me.
My hope is that through my travel blog, I can inspire others to travel too.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Welcome to Roam the Earth! Firstly, thank you for taking the time to explore the website, I hope that you have enjoyed our blog posts and our photography! If you haven't already, I'd love you to take a look around and let me know what you think!
Let me introduce myself! My name is Rachael Drury and I am the founder of Roam the Earth. I can also take credit for all of the travel photography displayed on the site and I write a vast majority of the blog posts too. I am currently based in Manchester, UK and travel from there!
"The use of travelling
is to regulate the imagination with reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, see them as they are."
Samuel Johnson
It was travel that led me to cameras. When I visited Canada for the first time in 1992, my parents gave me a camera and my Grandad handed me several rolls of film, all of which got used. Over the years I ended up with hundreds of photos, usually blue tac'd to my bedroom wall, most of them sadly lost through various moves now. Thank goodness for digital photography!
A self taught travel photographer, I take all of my photos with a Canon 70D, which I am more than happy with for now, though I do occasionally turn to my iPhone for quick snaps. Please browse the Roam the Earth Photography Gallery to see my work.
I approach travel writing with a journalistic mind. I don't want to share with you the itineraries of my trips abroad, I want to show you the true heart of a place. I dig deeper to find what makes a place tick and why people should make an effort to go there and experience it. I also love finding the wacky side of a destination; I like unique experiences, as I am sure many of us do!
"We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open."

Roam the Earth was established in January 2016 and has done incredibly well to find a voice so quickly, in such a saturated market. I am very proud of how well it's doing. Through the success of the blog, I have also found myself doing some freelance writing and actually getting published too, which is surely the dream!? I am excited to see where this blog can go in the future and I thank you, my readers, for helping it reach its goals!
